Pacific SMILE (Simulation for Midwifery Innovation Learning and Education)

Simulation is a method of training where individuals practice skills in a controlled, realistic environment. It helps midwifery students become more confident and competent in skill provision. All midwifery programs in the Pacific use simulation, but they often face challenges such as not having enough equipment or a dedicated space for simulated skill practice.

In the Pacific SMILE (Simulation for Midwifery Innovation Learning and Education) project, Burnet is partnering with education providers to bring new midwifery simulation labs to Pacific Island countries. The project aims to ensure all midwifery education programs in Pacific Island countries can offer consistent standards of clinical simulation.

Pacific SMILE commenced in 2024, with the first simulation lab set up at the National University of Samoa followed by a successful midwifery education and simulation conference. The lessons learned will guide the setup of six additional simulation labs in 2025 in Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Kiribati.
