Over the last decade, Mr Elvin Lufele (BSc, BSc Hons, MMSc) has worked as a research officer at the Vector-borne Disease Unit of the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research. He is passionate about maternal and child health research, focusing on the intersection between infection and adverse perinatal outcomes.

Does intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy reduce the risk of histological chorioamnionitis in Papua New Guinea?
In Papua New Guinea, spontaneous preterm birth, and maternal and early-onset neonatal sepsis are common complications of pregnancy. A central theme of these complications is chorioamnionitis. Intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) has been shown to reduce these complications of pregnancy in women with or without malaria. The non-malarial effect of SP on improving maternal and perinatal outcomes are poorly understood. The present study aims to determine the impact of the timing and number of doses of IPTp-SP on the risk of histology-confirmed chorioamnionitis in pregnant women in Madang Province, PNG.
